Michigan History Day (MHD), an educational program of the Historical Society of Michigan, is a yearlong educational program that encourages students to explore local, state, national, and world history. After selecting a historical topic that relates to the annual theme, students conduct extensive research by using libraries, archives, museums, and oral history interviews. They analyze and interpret their findings, draw conclusions about their topics’ significance in history, and create final projects in one of five categories: documentary, exhibit, paper, performance, or website. The experience culminates in a series of contests at the local level which progress to our state competition. Winning competitors are eligible to move on to the National History Day competition held in Washington D.C., each June! The National Finals will be virtual in 2021.

Please visit hsmichigan.org/mhd for more information.

Important Dates:

Registration Opens: March 1, 2021

Registration Closes: March 31, 2021

Virtual Submission Deadline for all Categories: March 31, 2021

Special Awards Nominations Due: March 31, 2021

Registration Fee: $35.00

How the registration process works:
1. MHD staff receive a spreadsheet from the district coordinator when the contest is over that lists the students and projects that were selected to advance to the State Finals.
2. The names and e-mail addresses listed on that form are imported in the Zfairs system. An e-mail is sent to the teachers/sponsors/coaches and students on that list to let them know they can register.
3. The teacher/sponsor /coach registers before his or her students and lets them know when he or she is done.
4. Students begin the registration process. It is HIGHLY recommended that students register as early as they can. You will not need to upload or update your project materials when you begin registration. Do not wait until the deadline to register!

Important Registration Tips:

  • Read the Student Registration Instructions before getting started!
  • You can register ONLY after your teacher/sponsor/coach has registered.
  • You can pay the registration fee by credit card, check, or through your school. Please check with your teacher to see if your school will be paying your registration fee. If you don't have your credit card available when you begin registration, select to pay by check and you can log in later to pay.
  • All registration steps, including uploading your project materials, must be completed by March 31, 2021. All materials must be uploaded by 11:59 p.m. on March 31, 2021.
  • Nominate your project for up to three special awards! Special Award Nominations

For category specific instructions on virtual project submission, see our Virtual Contest Guide. All students should read through this guide before beginning registration.

Seeking History Lovers!2021-MHD-Button-RGB---small.png

We need the help of individuals with an interest in history and education to serve as judges at the 2021 State Finals. The contest will be virtual this year. The most important qualities for a judge are strong common sense and an enthusiasm for interacting with students. You should have a lively interest in history, but not necessarily a specific background in history. We provide training in how to judge the Michigan History Day entries, and you will be placed on teams with experienced judges.

To register as a contest judge you must first create a judge's account.
Use the Create Account box to the right to create your account. You will need the username and password you create to access judging materials. After you have created your account, your information will be added to the judges' database and you will be contacted closer to the state contest with additional judging information.

Districts 7 & 8 judges can use their existing account to register for the State Finals. Open the Multi-Contest Judge Login Instructions for step by step directions or click here for a video of instructions.

Important dates for the 2021 State Finals:

Project materials to Round 1 judges: Friday, April 2, 2021

Round 1 Entry judging: Saturday, April 10, 2021, 8 a.m. to noon (If you aren't available this day, you can still judge.)

Final Round judging will begin Wednesday, April 14, 2021.

All judge results and evaluation forms are due by Tuesday, April 20, 2021.

Due to concerns about student privacy and equity, we will not be holding student interviews this year. We will provide time for judges to meet on Saturday, April 10 to discuss student entries and decide which projects will advance to the next level of the competition.

What will judging look like for each category?

Documentary: Students will upload a single PDF with their title page, process paper, and annotated bibliography and a link to their documentary to the registration system.

Exhibit: Students have two options for submitting an exhibit project this year. They can physically construct an exhibit and then take photos of it or they can create a virtual exhibit. They will upload a single PDF with their title page, process paper, annotated bibliography, and exhibit to the registration system.

Paper: Students will upload a single PDF with their title page, process paper (new for 2021!), paper, and annotated bibliography to the registration system.

Performance: Students will upload a single PDF with their title page, process paper, performance companion worksheet, and annotated bibliography and a link to a recording of their performance to the registration system. Both individual and group performances will submit recordings.

Websites: Students will share the link to their website in the registration system. The process paper and annotated bibliography will be embedded in their website.

Attention! The NHD Rule Book and Evaluation Rubrics have been revised for 2021.
